Subject: Some DC birds today 4/9

Hi all --

Barry and I had to make a trip to McLean, VA, today and took the opportunity
to stop by a couple of DC birding sites on the way back. We got to Roosevelt
Island around 9:30 and ran into some nice birds, even though it was getting
a bit late and warm:

12 Hermit Thrushes
1 WOOD THRUSH (a little early, eh?)
2 Gnatcatchers (heard only)
15 Rusty Blackbirds
1 PURPLE FINCH (male, singing!)
1 Phoebe
2 Sapsuckers
1 Winter Wren
4 Wood Duck
4-5 Tree Swallows
4-5 Barn Swallows (seem to be building under the pedestrian bridge).
3 Towhees
Plus a lot of Goldfinches, White-throated and Song Sparrows, Chickadees, etc.
etc.

We then went to Fletcher's Boathouse where it is obvious the White Perch
and Alewives are running. Despite the number of fishermen, we saw:
2 Rough-winged Swallows
1 YELLOWHROATED WARBLER (singing male, upstream of boathouse)
5-6 Caspian terns fishing
1 Savannah Sparrow
3-4 Myrtle Warblers

Nice morning...even though no Wild Turkey was seen on Roosevelt Is.

Cheers,
Gail Mackiernan
