With the emergence of insects over the last few weeks, I would like to inform anyone that is interested that there is a listserv set up for the discussion of butterflies, dragonflies, moths, spiders, insects, and just about anything else that comes close. It is a regional list, covering Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, DC, and some areas that are just over the borders into Pennsylvania. The Bug List was set up last May, and currently has a little over forty people on it. It is an informal list, with a few experts, a few beginners, and everyone in between. The discussion has always been friendly, and the email volume is far less than what you would get on MD Osprey or VA Birds. Digest form is available to those that prefer it. The strengths of the list are butterflies, moths, and dragonflies, as those are the most commonly watched insects; discussions about ladybugs, crane flies, cicadas, spiders, and a few other creepy-crawly things have been discussed as well. I have included below the brief description from the Yahoo Groups website. To subscribe to the list, one can either point their browser to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VA-MD-DE-Bugs and follow the instructions listed there. Another option is to send an email to: VA-MD-DE-Bugs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com with the message "subscribe" in the text of the email. Once subscribed, an introductory email will be sent that explains how to post, how to unsubscribe, and goes a bit more in depth about the list. If anyone has trouble getting subscribed, please contact me off of the listserv that you are reading this on at BlkVulture@aol.com. From the Yahoo site: VA-MD-DE-Bugs is a listserv dedicated to bugs that are observed in the described region. Information from just outside the described region is fine too. Topics include but are not limited to sightings of Dragonflies, Butterflies, Moths, Spiders, and any other insect or bug that you care to discuss that is seen within the region. Discussion should not include collecting of these creatures, but observation of them. Habitat discussion, conservation concerns, migration, trends, status, field guides, identification and other items are fodder for this list. Announcements about Butterfly surveys, or organizations dedicated either directly or indirectly about bugs are permitted. The goal is to present a forum where eager novices, interested amateurs and established experts can exchange information and discuss these critters with the goal of promoting knowledge about all of them to any subscriber that wishes to learn about bugs.
