Birding at Kinder Farm Park in Anne Arundel County this morning was very productive, even in the rain. Abbie Banks and I saw over 28 species between 9:00 am and noon. The male Prothonotory Warbler brought sunshine in the middle of the rain. Even though the lighting was poor due to rain and the tall bamboo around the pond, the Prothonotory was so bright and colorful. The yellow jumped out at you even in the shadows. It was around the pond and Wood Duck box where the screech owl has been seen roosting. We noticed the bird was when it was only 12 feet away. It then flew across the pond and landed close to children who were fishing. Ranger David Farner believes this is the first one reported at Kinder Farm Park. A pair of White-eyed Vireos were calling from a multiflora rose thicket on the opposite side of the pond from the Wood Duck Box. They were so close at eye level that you could see the eye color and yellow marking without binoculars. Several flocks of Palm Warblers were all over the Park, from meadow to woods. Flock of 5 Eastern Meadowlarks near park office near silos, one of which was singing from high in a tree. Several flocks of Common Mergansers flew over. At least 3 kettles of Broad Winged Hawks flew overhead just above the free tops. Additional Raptors included: Bald Eagle adult Red-tailed Hawk Red Shouldered Hawk American Kestrel Osprey Chipping, Field, Song and White-throated Sparrows were present. (I mention these as an Easter present for Bonnie Ott) Eastern Towhee calling form every field. One male gave a very good view. Several locations in the meadows have been marked with musk by Groundhogs. The smell reminds you of dried urine. If you haven't birded this treasure of a park in AA County, why are you waiting? It is a wonderful birding spot.
