They don't always flick the tail and they do have brownish flanks with heavy black spots on a white breast. Both Gray-cheeked and Bicknell's have gray flanks, and either one would be way early. In addition, Bicknell's typically shows a pretty strong buff in the throat and upper breast, a lot like a Swainson's. You also need to beware of the small race of Gray-cheeked that is quite warm brown on the back and tail. Nobody said this was easy. Paul O'Brien Rockville, Mont.
