We enjoyed sorting through a mixed flock of PINE, PALM and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. At an impoundment we watched the swooping antics of BARN, TREE, ROUGH-WING SWALLOWS, and PURPLE MARTIN. At least several hundred RUDDY DUCKS were observed. A GREEN HERON was observed flushing up from a creekside. I was pleased to hear the energetic burbling of MARSH WREN. A mud flat had 4 SNOWY EGRETS showing off their yellow slippers. A GREAT EGRET made a showing here as well. Heard my first COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER of the spring. We observed an OSPREY do a funny ( to us )thing : it flew full steam ahead directly at a snag, made contact with talons extended, whereupon the top of the snag broke off with a very loud crrrrack. Said Osprey then attempted to fly off with its` prize of a good portion of the snag dangling in the air. The weight became too much and it had to give up and let it fall to the earth. We had never observed such an assault on a snag before.
