Yellow-rumped warblers flitted everywhere in the area between the bridge below the dam to the equipment barn. Two double crested cormorants sat on the small islands, while a single Caspian tern flew about overhead and two pied-billed grebes floated serenely. One herring and one ring-billed were all that was left of the gull population, but swallows were numerous -- barns, trees and purple martins flitted and swooped above the lake. There were a number of chipping sparrows in the woods. A mystery we came across was a dead turkey vulture in the middle of the narrow dirt path that goes through the woods above the lake. The feathers were all gone, but the skin seemed to be there, and it was lying amid scattered tufts of gray fur which were all that remained of a squirrel. It had evidently been there for at least some time, because the smell was pretty ripe, so we didn't hang around to try to solve the mystery.
