Webb" Subject: Summer Tanager in Baltimore County Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" This Sunday morning, I heard a Summer Tanager singing outside my Baltimore suburban home. This evening, I saw a tanager sp. in the "tulip poplar" tree behind my house: Summer Tanager red in head, flanks, and tail, and a more peachy colored belly. Wings were a contrasting darker gray in color. Made me think Scarlet? A few minutes after it flew back into the woods, I heard the distinct "ticky-tuck" calls of a Summer Tanager. No further songs heard. After consulting with the Sibley guide, I conclude the bird is a yearling male Summer Tanager, hatched last summer. KEC and Joe McD, take note - your Soldier's Delight birds may be returning or present now. Also arrived: my first yard Catbird seen this morning, and a Wood Thrush heard up the road this evening.
