I joined the bird-walk at Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore this morning, April
22. One of the most astounding aspects was that for the first 45 minutes all
the human participants were males. Just as we were about to break out the
beer and cigars, a young lady from California, in town for a job interview,
showed up to pull us back into line. The birding was a little slow but she
helped us appreciate what we had by getting 8 life-birds, including Wood
Thrush and Veery. We went all the way to the bottom of the maintenance road,
which had many of the best birds of the day.

Some of the main species:

* = lifers for our California visitor

*Broad-winged Hawk - 5
*Solitary Sandpiper - 4
Spotted Sandpiper - 1
Rough-winged Swallow - 5
House Wren - 2
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers - Scads of them!
*Wood Thrush - at least 3
*Veery - first of the season and maybe a comp-list first (1)
Catbird - 3
*Blue-headed Vireo - 2
*Prairie Warbler - 2
Ovenbird - 1+
N Parula - 1
*Northern Waterthrush (buffy thin-tapering eye-line) - 1
Yellow Warbler - 2 engaging in a singing duel
Yellowthroat - 1
Myrtle Warbler - 1

P.S. I just returned from a quick trip to N Utah and W Wyoming where I may
have established a new N American record for failing to find Black
Rosy-Finch ( = Devil Finch). I did at least get Chukar as a life-bird on
Antelope Island (Great Salt Lake), which must be the Chukar capitol of the
world, and had great opportunities to study California and Franklin's Gulls
in great breeding plumage. Many of the Franklin's Gulls were strikingly
pinkish.
