Our team, competing in the single-county division, is made up of Captain Hal Wierenga, Co-Captain Lynn Davidson, Mr. Worcester County Mark Hoffman, and Marshall Iliff the Wonder Boy. In 1998 our team took third place in the Cape May County tally (possibly the birdiest county in New Jersey). In 1999 the Yellowthroats won the single-county division and last year, in 2000, they tied for most species seen in Cape May County (180) with a team led by another Maryland native son, Michael O'Brien. It has been great fun but it has also been a wonderful way to raise funds for MOS outreach programs. We have been able to pay for three additional scholarships to summer ecology/ornithology camps for Maryland Educators; we have funded a Mist Net Replacement Program to help needy graduate students continue their valuable research efforts; we have collected almost $10,000 over the past three years in support of these and other education, research, and sanctuary efforts. Please consider joining us this year in support of the MOS Maryland Yellowthroats. You can help support the Yellowthroats by making an outright donation or a pledge per species. We expect our team to see around 180 species but depending on the weather and the luck of the day, the final tally will likely range between 150 and 200 species. If you wish to make a donation, please send a check made out to "MOS" to me, Norm Saunders, at 1261 Cavendish Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20905. If you wish to make a pledge (ten cents per species, twenty cents per species, or whatever else you feel comfortable with) just send me an e-mail (marshhawk@att.net) letting me know how much you want to pledge. I'll be in touch with all pledgers as soon after the World Series as possible to let you know how the team made out. All donors and pledgers will be recognized and thanked in the September issue of MD Yellowthroat. By the way, the World Series this year is on Saturday, May 12. In advance, thank you for your continued support!
