I went with four friends to Rock Creek Park on Sunday. By the Visitor Center, we encountered two birds that looked like either Nashville Warblers, but with wing-bars, or a Blue-headed Vireo without the eye-ring bleeding into the beak. We all got a really good look at these birds and I originally thought it was a Nashville because of the eye-ring and the gray on the head and yellow underneath. But these birds had wing-bars or what looked like wing bars. Clearly no butter butt so Yellow-Rumped was ruled out. Looking through the field guides we stumbled on the Blue-headed Vireo. We had all noticed the white under the throat on these birds that I had first discounted as poor lighting. The birds looked more warbler sized, but looks can be deceiving with a lot of activity. However, the eye-rings were clearly white circled rings, not like the Blue-headed Vireo in the field guides or Yellow-Rumps. We all realized that it was much more likely to see a Nashville Warbler =96 we just couldn=92t get past the wing-bars. Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated.
