Some highlights .... MYRTLE WARBLERS were everywhere, and they "followed" me around. At least it felt that way -- everytime I checked out a movement, it was one of those fellas. It was quite exhausting. :-) Heard an OVENBIRD, as well as several N. PARULA and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. A nice treat was a wonderful view of a BLACK-THROATED BLUE (I almost didn't look at it, another Myrtle, I figured). Also, several smart-looking BLACK & WHITE WARBLERS were heard and seen crawling about the trees. At the point where the trail goes from running along the stream to into the woods, I heard an old friend ... "weetio! weetio! weetio!" The HOODED WARBLER is back. The little rascal stayed hidden in the bushes. Another goofy-sounding voice in that vicinity came from a WHITE-EYED VIREO, a song that cracks me up everytime I hear it! On a less exciting note (literally) numerous chants of the RED-EYED VIREO were heard in the woods, and two birds were even seen. And a faraway YELLOW-THROATED VIREO gave my eyes quite a workout. No pain, no gain. One strange-looking bird had me scratching my head. It turned out to be a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. (Thank goodness, I was ready to call it a mutant female red-winged blackbird crossed with a white-crowned sparrow-house finch hybrid.) But there was no mistaking this avian hunk --a very handsome male SCARLET TANAGER was seen and heard in the woods. Other birds of interest in this little park in the middle of surburban sprawl included WOOD THRUSH, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, and one of my favorite birds, those silly and funny little GRAY CATBIRDs. cheers, shireen -- Shireen Gonzaga Baltimore, MD whimbrel@home.com ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
