In the area of the DC Veteran's Memorial and Constitution Gardens, new birds include Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Scarlet Tanager and Savannah Sparrow. Baltimore Orioles are singing in the high elms, and the White-throated Sparrows are still filling up on the amazing yield of elm seeds. Among the warblers, Yellow-rumped are still the most abundant, but others include Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Yellow and Ovenbirds. It's been slow birding, but with some light moments. Today I got the closest look ever at a male Scarlet Tanager, who inspected me from as close a 12 feet, and repeatedly sang while I watched. After about 5 minutes of this, he left and I walked away. When I glanced at my watch, it occurred to me that I was wearing a red golf shirt and black pants. Perhaps he thought I was the biggest, weirdest tanager he'd ever seen, but since I wasn't singing, he figured I was not a threat. Next week I'll try the orange golf shirt and the black pants, and see if I can draw in any orioles!
