While there, I asked the heads of the dredging programs for MPA and Maryland Environmental Service (MES) if they would consider allowing birders on Poplar Island for the North American Migration Count (Saturday, May 12, 2001). They agreed to discuss it with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since it is primarily a Corps construction project. They got back to me saying it would be allowed under the following conditions: *Access to and from Poplar Island would be by MES boat and would be at the beginning and end of their regular work shift, 7AM - 7PM. The boat is boarded at Lowe's Wharf in Sherwood, Talbot County. *A maximum of two birders would be allowed on the island. *You would be required to wear hard hats (supplied by MES). *You would be required to have on some type of eyeware: either eyeglasses, sunglasses, or safety glasses. *You would be required to wear hard leather boots. Low-cut shoes and tennis shoes would be prohibited. *You would only be allowed on the part of the island where the construction has already been completed. There would be no admittance to the active construction site. *If anyone does not follow the requirements while on the island, they will be removed from the island. (This could also affect future access.) _____________ If anyone is interested in this proposal, please let me know as soon as possible since I will need to contact MES to make the arrangements. Interested birders should be familiar with shorebird, gull, and tern ID. Thanks for considering this offer. (I would do it, but I will be surveying Hart-Miller Island.)
