In defense of the screw-in type of leg locks, I would contend that they last longer than flip-locks. To prevent the problem you mentioned, namely that they become hard to tighten after prolonged use, simply lubricate the threads with a light grease. I use a white grease from Sears that is intended for light machinery such as electric motors. A little dab is all that it takes to keep the screw easy to turn and, more importantly, to tighten.
