Top birds this week are WHITE-FACED IBIS and MISSISSIPPI KITE in VA. Other birds of interest include AMERICAN BITTERN, LITTLE BLUE HERON, MERLIN, SORA, shorebirds, LEAST TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, flycatchers, WARBLING VIREO, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BANK and CLIFF SWALLOWS, MARSH WREN, VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, warblers, including BAY-BREASTED AND ORANGE-CROWNED, SUMMER TANAGER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and BOBOLINK. An adult WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA, on Sunday, May 6, at the base of the observation platform off the Freshwater Marsh trail, which is located off the Wildlife Drive (open 3:00 p.m. to dusk) on its last (westernmost) leg. The platform is about 0.2 mi north of the entrance to the drive and is easily reached by following the Freshwater Marsh Trail out of the Visitor's Center parking lot. A MISSISSIPPI KITE (possibly two) were seen from the observation tower at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA, on Sunday, May 6. AMERICAN BITTERNS were reported from Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, NE DC, on May 2, 3 and 4, and at Huntley Meadows on May 2. LITTLE BLUE HERONS were reported from Lilypons, Frederick County, MD, and Huntley Meadows May 4. MERLIN sightings occurred at Accotink Bay Wildlife Preserve, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, on May 3 and at Black Hill Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD, on May 5. A SORA was reported from North Point State Park in Baltimore County, MD, on May 4. Shorebird numbers continued to increase last week. A BLACK- BELLIED PLOVER was seen at the Hunting Creek mudflats near Dyke Marsh, Fairfax County. BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, WILSON'S PLOVERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and PIPING PLOVERS were all seen at Chincoteague over the weekend. LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen at Lake Elkhorn in Howard County, MD, and at North Beach, Calvert County, MD. SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were seen at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and also at North Beach. A WILLET was seen at the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, Loudoun County, VA, on May 1. SOLITARY and SPOTTED SANDPIPERS showed up at a variety of locations. A STILT SANDPIPER flew over Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD, on May 5 and BLACK- NECKED STILTS were sighted at Elliott Island, also in Dorchester Co. WHIMBRELS, OYSTERCATCHERS and DUNLINS were all reported from Chincoteague over the weekend. A LEAST TERN was reported at Hanover Parkway Pond in Greenbelt, Prince Georges County, MD, on May 7. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen at the G. Richard Thompson WMA in western Fauquier County, VA, on May 6. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen at Lake Elkhorn May 1. WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were heard at Four Mile Run in Arlington County, VA, on May 5. ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS were widely reported throughout the area during the week. WARBLING VIREOS were singing at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, at Dyke Marsh, and along the C&O Canal near Fletcher's Boathouse, NW DC, and near Glen Echo in Montgomery Co. YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS were reported from several locations including Rock Creek Park, Huntley Meadows and Leesylvania State Park, Prince William Co, VA. BANK SWALLOWS were found at Lilypons on May 4. CLIFF SWALLOWS were flying around the Monocacy Aqueduct on the C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, May 4, and at Kenilworth Park, NE DC. MARSH WRENS were heard at Dyke Marsh on May 3. VEERIES were seen throughout the area, including at Longbranch Nature Center, Arlington Co, at Monticello Park in Alexandria, VA, and on the Mall in downtown DC. SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were observed at Monticello and at Glencarlyn Park, Arlington Co. New warbler arrivals this week included BAY-BREASTED, sighted at the Longbranch Nature Center on May 6. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on the west side of Four Mile Run in Arlington County on May 2. Among the 35 species of warbler tallied this week were GOLDEN- WINGED WARBLER, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER and BLACKPOLL WARBLER. A BREWSTER'S WARBLER was seen in Four Mile Run Park on May 3. CAPE MAY WARBLERS were seen at several locations, including one seen in Rock Creek Park behind the Nature Center on May 2, in Monticello Park, and at Longbranch Nature Center; and a CANADA WARBLER was seen in Battery Kemble Park, NW DC, on May 1. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen at Huntley Meadows and at Leesylvania on May 2. SWAINSON'S WARBLERS continued to be seen and heard at the Great Dismal Swamp NWR, Suffolk, VA. SUMMER TANAGERs were reported from the National Arboretum, NE DC; Calvert Cliffs SP, Calvert Co, MD, and, in VA, at Longbranch Nature Center and Leesylvania SP. BOBOLINKS appeared throughout the area including Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Beltsville Agricultural Center, Prince Georges Co, on Lilypons Rd near Rte 85 in Frederick Co, and at several locations in VA. SCARLET TANAGERS, BLUE GROSBEAKs, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, INDIGO BUNTINGS, and both ORCHARD and BALTIMORE ORIOLES were widely noted.
