There was a nice variety of bird sightings and the weather was perfect. However, one particular incident is still in my mind as being unique. Approximately one year ago, Joseph Mangano and I observed an orange variant Scarlet Tanager [pictured in Peterson Eastern Birds, page 261] at the creek near the street end. We spent quite a bit of time watching this bird. The color was bright as a fresh cut orange. Imagine our surprise when today one tear later, an orange variant Scarlet Tanger flew to the identical location in the creek at Monticello. After this incident, last year, we both tried unsuccessfully to discover information regarding the frequency of this in the species. We had no success. Someone on this Osprey board did state that he saw an orange variant one time 15 years ago. If you have any information, please post it. There was a small crowd observing this stunning bird today. Other sightings at Monticello; Blackburnian Black-throated Green Blue-winged Warbler Chestnut sided Warbler American Redstart Myrtle Warbler Blackpoll Magnolia Warbler Northern Parula Scarlet Tanager Eastern Towhee Veery Wood Thrush Swainson's Thrush Northern Waterthrush Warbling Vireo Red-eyed Vireo Northern Oriole Cedar Waxwing Others sighted a Cape May Warbler 32 species seen or heard. Two dogs, one leashed.
