Bird species counts were down a bit, but all told it was another wonderfully successful year for the premier competitive birding event! Michael O'Brien's team once again took high count in Cape May County with a tally of 172 species. Following close on Michael's heels, tied for second place, were the MD Yellowthroats and the Zen Zugunrueh team (which includes honorary Marylander George Armistead), both with 168 species. Not far behind was the ANS team (Mark Garland, Paul Pisano, John Bjerke, Leo Weigant, and Tom Feild) with a total of 165 species. The really outstanding news was in the Youth Division, Kindergarten to 9th grade section--top honors were taken by TWO teams of birders fielded by Centerville Middle School, Queen Anne's County. Their two teams (comprising some 16 earnest young birders) saw 126 and 124 species respectively and swept the competition. Looks like Maryland has a flock of young birders coming along hot on our heels! Congrats to all who competed in the 1th World Series of Birding!!!
