The article discusses how in Chicago and New York the nighttime lights on the tops of high rise buildings are being turned off to reduce the number of bird collisions during the migration. It's being done at the Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center and in many other locations. The article indicates that the lights are dimmed between April-May and then again in September-October. The results so far have been impressive....not to mention what they must be saving on their electric bill. Does anyone know if anything like this is being done in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area? Have there been any night time bird collisions with high-rise buildings, TV-towers, or any other man-made structures in the area during this migration? Should our metropolitan area adopt this practice of dimming lights on tall structures during migration? Your comments, on and off list are appreciated.
