A GREEN HERON provided some interest. There were also quite a few Spotted Sandpipers and a few Solitaries, but the tide was high and all the river mud flats were covered. Some warblers were around, some of these obviously migrants, others breeders: Redstart (6), Magnolia (3), Chestnut-sided (1), Parula (3), Yellow (3-4), Yellowthroat(8), Prothonotary (2), Northern Waterthrush (3), Blackpoll (3). Also excellent looks at two Yellow-billed Cuckoos, and a good assortment of local breeders: Baltimore and Orchard Oriole, Red-eyed, White-eyed and Warbling Vireo, Indigo Bunting. Hains Point was pretty quiet, but the Purple Martins were in their box at the golf course, a number of both Yellow Warblers and Yellowthroats singing, Eastern Kingbirds. No sign here or on West Potomac Park of the White-fronted Goose Rob Hilton and others found Sunday. There was also a very large passage of Red Admiral butterflies -- must have seen 20-30 along the river, at KAG and even in my yard when we got home! Swainson's Thrush, Redstart, Magnolia and Blackpoll singing in my yard now... as well as the (resident) Baltimore Oriole.
