Birds 5/18-20 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Birding in Garrett County last weekend produced the following = interesting sightings: Late afternoon of 5/18 at Little Meadows Lake - nothing notable, only = migrants were Bank Swallows. At Piney Dam - 6 DC Cormorants in the dead = trees near the dam. 5/19 - Starting in early morning at Roth Rock Firetower in the rain 2 = singing male Mourning Warblers were seen well by our party of five. = The only migrants there were a singing Tennessee Warbler and an adult = White-crowned Sparrow. Among the other breeders both Chestnut-sided = Warbler and Rose-breasted Grosbeak were particularly common. A singing = male Hooded Warbler was very conspicuous and a Black-billed Cuckoo was = heard. A Ruffed Grouse was seen on Roth Rock Road as we departed. Redhouse - 1 Upland Sandpiper, 1 of each yellowlegs, and about 8 Least = Sandpipers at a farm pond. Pleasant Valley - 3 pairs of Upland Sandpipers on Norris Welch Road = including one standing on the utility pole at the gate to the sewage = ponds. Purple Martin colony on Pleasant Valley Road. One Red-headed = Woodpecker on eastward extension of Pleasant Valley Road. Combination Road - distant scope view of one Henslow's Sparrow W of = Potomac Camp Road. Bobolinks were common at this and the previous two = sites. Kitzmiller - one Kentucky Warbler heard on North Hill Road and one = Carolina Wren heard in town. Jennings Randolph Lake - one Golden-winged Warbler doing an alternate = song similar to, but recognizably different from, Blue-winged Warbler = alternate song. One Carolina Wren seen and another heard singing. They = seem to be doing well after recent mild winters. Aaron Run Road - excellent scope views of 2 Henslow's Sparrows about a = quarter mile off Westernport Road. 5/20 - At New Germany SP most of the breeding birds were seen. Of = particular interest were the Yellow-rumped Warblers in the location of = past years near the ranger house by the lake. We saw suggestive = behavior by two males and a female on this occasion. Finzel Swamp - Northern Waterthrushes singing. Virginia Rail gave one = series of calls. On the way home I made a stop at the Terminus in Cumberland. There were = 1 Green Heron, 2 Killdeer, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, and 7 Ring-billed Gulls.
