Blue-winged Warbler* (route near Hanock had at least two singing males, and for my first time ion 4 runs of this route, we had one singing at noon!) Golden-winged Warbler* (State bird #310 for Armistead; one at Snaggy Mountain Rd. was heard by Iliff only, who was wracked with guilt when the bird quieted down and our schedule dictated that we had to leave. Thankfully, one sang at Finzel for the entire team saving Armistead his state bird!) Northern Parula Yellow Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler Magnolia Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Yellow-rumped "Myrtle" Warbler* (sometimes a migrant only on this route. We had consinstent singing males at several locations which suggested breeding: Roth Rock Rd., Youghigheny Mtn. Resort near Cranesville, base of entrance road to 4-H Center of Rte. 495. As nesting has been confirmed in Garrett only once it would be of interest if anyone would track these birds for nesting activity, especially the Yough Mtn. Resort (2 mi north of Cranesville on Cranesville Rd.) bird which will nest in one of 6 White Pines around the resort entrance) Black-throated Green Warbler Blackburnian Warbler Yellow-throated Warbler* (Furnacetown) Pine Warbler Prairie Warbler Blackpoll Warbler* (last minute save; one singing at West OC Pond was first indication that a small fallout had hit OC, in 5 minutes of hurried birding we had 2 Blacpoll, 3 Blackburnian, 1 Magnolia, and several other unidentified warblers) Cerulean Warbler* (two at consistent New Germany Rd. sites) Black-and-white Warbler American Redstart Prothonotary Warbler Worm-eating Warbler* (Iliff only; non-singing bird spished up at Furnacetown) Ovenbird Northern Waterthrush* (many Garrett locations) Louisiana Waterthrush* (Swallow Falls) Kentucky Warbler* (one singing, one spished up at Furnacetown) Mourning Warbler* (3+ males at known nest site in Garrett, one surprise bird singing at Cranesville Rd. crossing of Muddy Creek was a surprise. Could they nest here?) Common Yellowthroat Hooded Warbler* (probably deserves code 5 ranking, at least 4 in Garrett) Canada Warbler* (numerous Garrett sites) Yellow-breasted Chat Summer Tanager* (one flew across road off Millville Rd., saving us the effort of spishing one up) Scarlet Tanager Northern Cardinal Rose-breasted Grosbeak * (ranked as 4, should be 5 - abundant in Garrett) Blue Grosbeak* (one near Elliott) Indigo Bunting Eastern Towhee Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Vesper Sparrow* (one singing bird off Blue Ribbon Rd. was not singing by 5:20 but was singing at 6:05) Savannah Sparrow Grasshopper Sparrow Henslow's Sparrow* (missed by Armistead; only two songs heard from birds braving the drizzle at nest area with 30+ birds) Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow* (two seen at Elliott) Seaside Sparrow Song Sparrow Swamp Sparrow Dark-eyed "Slate-colored" Junco* (3+ heard on Roth Rock Rd., one heard at Muddy Creek) Bobolink Red-winged Blackbird Eastern Meadowlark Boat-tailed Grackle Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird Orchard Oriole Baltimore Oriole Purple Finch* (two seen at Swallow Falls) House Finch Pine Siskin* (8-10 at Muddy Creek, the most consistent location for them this year) American Goldfinch House Sparrow TOTAL = 204 species (6 unshared species included: Tricolored Heron (MH, GLA); Little Blue Heron (MH, MJI); Sharp-shinned Hawk (MJI, MH); Belted Kingfisher (GLA, MH); Worm-eating Warbler (MJI); Henslow's Sparrow (MJI, MH) Best, Marshall Iliff *********************** Marshall Iliff miliff@aol.com Annapolis, MD ************************ ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
