It was worth the wait. = Yesterday (5/22) there was a trickle, but today, Hal Wierenga and I were = astounded and delighted by the appearance of 6 Mississippi Kites! Five = came through in a span of 10 minutes beginning at 11:08. Three were in = view at one time. The sixth arrived at 12:25. All were subadults. We = now have an unprecedented 9 for the year. Where are they going??? We = also watched for an hour a Peregrine Falcon fly in with a pigeon, perch = and devour the bird. Feathers were flying! The migration also produced = a White-Rumped Sandpiper yesterday, more than 100 Cedar Waxwings and 25 = Common Nighthawks today. Butterflies were numerous (14 species) with = Red Admirals and American Ladies abundant. 5/22/2001 Tuesday TV 2 OS 4 BE 2 SS 1 ML 1 (Late) TOTAL 10 HOURS 4 =20 5/23/2001 Wednesday TV 10 OS 23 MK 6 BE 3 NH 1 SS 4 CH 1 BW 24 TOTAL 72 HOURS 7 =20 YEAR-TO-DATE BV 296 TV 4669 OS 463 MK 9 BE 60 NH 77 SS 1939 CH 411 RS 226 BW 615 RT 314 AK 333 ML 49 PG 1 U 51 TOTAL 9513 HOURS 457.4 =20 Fort Smallwood Park is located on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Patapsco River, 11 miles south of Baltimore, MD.
