It works great, and as long as you have brushed the lens first with a camelhair brush there is no danger of scratches or coating damage. Liquids, I've found, are to harsh for most of today's multi-coated optics. For purists I recommend a microfiber lens cloth after fogging the lens with a short breath. As for lubes, the manufacturers of most high-quality binocs do not say a whole lot other than keep the mechanism clean. DO NOT USE OIL! Light-to-medium weight grease is what's used on the focusing mechanism if it is exposed, some roof prisms have no exposed parts to lube and I recommend having it done by a pro as the 'nocs have to be taken apart. You should never have to lube these, however. Keep your stick on the ice. ********************************* Frank Boyle ravenfrank@earthlink.net on vacation in my home state of Vermont ********************************* -----Original Message----- From: Maryland Birds & Birding [mailto:MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM]On Behalf Of linda vogel Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2001 2:42 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: [MDOSPREY] Optics Care Hello Birders, All of us use optics, often expensive optics, in the pursuit of our hobby, Birding. While I have occasionally seen postings that discuss the attributes of various pieces of gear, I have not noticed a discussion on the care of this gear. So, I would like to offer this subject for those who, like me, would like to keep their gear in good working order. Let me begin by asking a few introductory questions. 1. What is your favorite method for cleaning lenses? What method would you caution everyone to avoid? 2. Do you every need to grease you gear? (I imagine several of you probably have binos over 10 years old and have needed to lube them from time to time.) What type of grease do you use? 3. My glasses have never "fogged", but if they do, can any one suggest an efficient way to clear them? Please feel free to answer these questions or simply add to them. I look forward to your response. Best wishes and good birding, Van Cecil Bird Club __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
