We had 12 warbler species, including 2 Blackburnian, a Black-throated Green and several Canadas along Jake's Landing Rd. in Cape May County. Thursday, May 24: the Delaware bayshore had many shorebirds with hundreds, maybe thousands, of Semipalmated Sandpipers, Red Knots and Ruddy Turnstones at Slaughter Beach, Sussex County, DE, just after a midday high tide. The same afternoon, Port Mahon Rd. (Kent County, DE) had thousands more shorebirds; at this location Dunlin was present in large numbers, as well as Semipalmated Sands and Turnstones. Red Knots were rather few at Port Mahon. Ted Harvey WMA (Kent County, DE) had lots of Black Skimmers and some Forster's and Least Terns the same day. Friday, May 25: the PACIFIC LOON was again well seen in the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester County, MD. It was well back in the channel away from the open ocean, near the quiet shore of Assateague Island, and did not dive while we viewed it at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 27: at Kenilworth Park, NE DC, there was at least one (Gail MacKiernan and Barry Cooper had two) GRASSHOPPER SPARROW singing at the edge of one of the football fields. An ALDER FLYCATCHER was heard singing at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and glimpsed briefly. (Gail and Barry also heard WILLOW FLYCATCHER there.) Sunday, May 27: the CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was still moving around the same area at Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel County, MD, at around noon. The bird does not sing the zhee-zhee-zhee song very often (at least not at this time of day) but lets out a frequent stream of chip notes, higher and less intense than the chips of a Chipping Sparrow but still loud enough to be intriguing. This noise helped me locate the bird. I concur with the comments of others that Kinder Farm is a great place to bird. The overgrown farm fields had at least 3 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, a PRAIRIE WARBLER, BROWN THRASHER, BLUE GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and numerous FIELD SPARROWS, in addition to the Clay-Colored. There were also 2 AMERICAN REDSTART in the trees along the paved bike path and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS calling in several places.. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD and Dewey Beach, DE D.H.
