Some highlights follow: At KAG a female COMMON MERGANSER in the channel from the Anacostia into the marsh; the date is very late for this species, but the bird was diving and looked perfectly healthy 3 WARBLING VIREOS in trees near the boardwalk, near where these birds were seen last week 1 (maybe 2) YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS in the woods along the River Trail 1 singing PROTHONOTARY in the wet woods near the start of the River Trail. Mary also had a late YELLOW-BREASTED SAPSUCKER off the River Trail. We listened for but did not hear any calling empids. Butterflies: Eastern Comma, Red Admiral, Spring (?) Azure Dragonflies: Common Whitetail At Kingman Lake 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER 10 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER 5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (species #201 in DC for me) We did not see or hear Grasshopper Sparrow in the no-mow area in Kenilworth Park, where 1-2 were observed last week. This could have been because the DC Police were using the area for K-9 training. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD D.H.
