Again, thanks to all who suggested possible sites for Chuck-wills-widow when I requested information recently. Special thanks to a member of the Baltimore Bird Club (Shirley Geddes) who told me off-list of a singing Chuck near her summer place in the general vicinity of Fort Smallwood in Ann Arundel County. Shirley suggested a certain spot to start my search. When I got out of the car and walked a short way down the road she suggested, two Chucks were already serenading the evening. Walking down a path, I got very close to one of them (judging by the loudness and clarity of the call). I tried my tape, and the bird flew lazily over my head and landed in a tree not thirty feet from me. I stayed almost an hour listening to the songs of at least three (more probably four) of them nearby, catching a second glimpse of one on my way back to the car. I heard one of them calling (or "grunting"). This life-species was a long-desired one for me. Listening to all of them surrounding me at once, I felt like a chocoholic taking a bath in syrup. It was a complete Chuck-wills-widow experience.
