We were at the inlet 3 times from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. we found no loons at all. Fog kept rolling and cutting visibility way down. During one break in the fog a pair of large seabirds flew by in beautiful close formation just above the waves--makes one think of military aircraft. They were similar in markings and size. Both were mottled brownish with pale bellies. They had definite collars of white and dark; and an edging of white just above the tail on the back. A look through available resources indicates immature greater shearwaters. A life bird for me-- just not the one I was chasing that day. The surprises are one thing that makes this so much fun!
