The most recent report, though, came to me from visiting birders who saw the Kelp Gull at the Sea Breeze on May 24, after two tries earlier in the day without luck. This is consistent with the vague pattern we've seen of the gull leaving in the spring and being very sporadic, then returning in the summer, but being often chased off by boaters who tie up at the piers. Be advised that the managers who worked during the heady madness of Kelp Gull hysteria are no longer working at the restaurant, and that most of the new staff there are lucky to know a gull from a sparrow. (In other words, it's not much use to call the restaurant and ask). It's certainly worth going to see if the Kelpster is there, and it would sure help to have more reports (positive or not) when people do try for it.
