Using channels 1-7 can create havoc as these are the channels used by the more powerful and licensed radios for delivery dispatch etc. The higher numbers Gail is referring too are the so called quiet codes that help to keep conversations on one channel "private." There are 14 channels and 38 quiet codes or sub codes as they are referred to sometimes. All of these radios have a car to car range of 3/4 of a mile. In open terrain you can get up to 2 miles. Under ideal line of sight from a mountain side to the valley below there are reports of 10 miles. This is very rare indeed. They are best used in places where birders congregate, like a wildlife refuge. I hope that this post helps everyone not familiar with the radios.
