We had a small disturbance in the short growth next to the path and assumed it was a chipmunk until the critter came out and crossed the path. Then we saw a small brown bird scuttling across the path with its wings partially open, more or less like an injured bird display. The bird continued fifteen feet or so through the scrub on the opposite side of the path and then flew up to a low perch. It proceeded from perch to perch, always moving higher and always remaining in a fairly direct line of sight until it perched quite high over the path where we were able to get a good view of a very agitated ovenbird. We were momentarily entranced and thrilled and then moved on to give the bird some space. I assume it had a nest near by, but we did not presume to search for it.
