Birds Comments: cc: Steve Cardano , SMAS , Jlstasz@aol.com, Marshall , Greg Miller MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Folks Gwen and I went looking for a Least Bittern at the Nanjemoy Environmental Center in lower western Charles Co. on Monday, June 25. Steve Cardano had invited us down to look for Least Bittern which nest there. He was banding and capturing Osprey and unable to go with us. The captured birds will be flown to Ohio as part of a relocation project. It is heart warming to know that the Osprey population is healthy enough that we can share this magnificent animals with other parts of the county. Steve lent us a canoe and off we went. After about two hours of searching the tributaries of the Nanjemoy Creek we located a singing bird 10 feet in front of us. A nice heard bird for Gwen in the county. It would not show itself so we enjoyed the in-your-face poopoopoo song. Other birds of note on this foray were: 10 Great Blue Heron 6 Mute Swan (one adult, 5 juveniles) 15 Osprey 2 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Red Tail Hawk 1 Greater Yellowleg - a surprise Yellow-billed Cuckoo Ruby-throated Hummingbird along Tayloes Neck Road. 2 Eastern Wood Peewee Acadian Flycatcher Eastern Phoebe Eastern Kingbird 3 White-eyed Vireo Yellow-throated Vireo Re-eyed Vireo 4 Purple Martin 10 Marsh Wrens (photographed) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Eastern Bluebird 2 Northern Parula Warbler 4 Yellow-throated Warbler Prairie Warbler - Durham Church Road Ovenbird - Durham Church Road 5 Common Yellowthroat 2 Blue Grosbeak 4 Indigo Bunting Eastern Meadowlark - Rt. 6 at Hancock Run Road Orchard Oriole 2 Goldfinch Also for the day, Whip-poor-will - singing at our house in Waldorf before we left in the AM but always a treat. Thanks to Steve for the help and good luck with the Osprey relocation project to Ohio. Maybe Grey Miller can see one of these animals from his hospital bedroom window.
