Came out this morning looking for nesting Blue Grosbeaks. Walked along River Road from the upper eastern parking lot to W. Willard Rd. Returned mostly along Hunting Quarter Rd.. Didn't find find any grosbeaks, but did end up with a respectable 50 species. My personal highlights were 2 territorial Am. Robins(saw another 4) and 3 Am. Kestrels. Although robins are common here in migration and sometimes in winter, they are rare breeders. The kestrels were over the field north of Sycamore Landing Rd.. I suspect they bred in the now unoccupied farm buildings. They use to nest here ever year, but have been absent recently when a horse farm has been present. Breeding activity continues. I heard the following species singing- Acadian Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo,Eastern Bluebird,Wood Thrush(7), Am. Robin, Catbird, Prairie Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Scarlet Tanager, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Indigo Bunting, and red-winged Blackbird. Also a few migrants- 40 Rough-winged Swallows on the overhead wires and an Osprey flying toward the Potomac. ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
