Still some singing passerines, and the first "fall" shorebirds. The shorebirds included two Lesser Yellowlegs and a single Solitary Sandpiper seen yesterday at the U MD Central Farm (not publicly accessible, but you can get a pretty good look at the shorebird habitat by walking along Folly Quarter Rd. with a scope). Highlights: BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON--one heard (Kwop!) in the vegetation at the near edge of Lake Kittamaqundi, abeam the heron tree (Mon., 7/9) LESSER YELLOWLEGS--two at UMd Central Farm 7/11 (also one seen on 7/12) SOLITARY SANDPIPER--one at UMd Central Farm 7/11 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO--two heard vocalizing on 7/11, one at Henryton Rd. and one at Daniels Rd. (along Patapsco River) GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER--one weeping at Middle Patuxent Environmental Area on 7/11 (I don't expect to be hearing these birds much longer) YELLOW-THROATED VIREO--one singing at Henryton Rd., 7/11 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER--one singing at Daniels Rd. on 7/11. WORM-EATING WARBLER--one rattlling at Henryton Rd., 7/11 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH--family of three walking along a log in river at Henryton Rd. and two different ones heard at Daniels Rd., all on 7/11 BLUE GROSBEAK--singing male atop trees and signs at Park & Ride (US 29 & Rte 100), Meadowbrook Rd. on both 7/9 and 7/12 E. MEADOWLARK--one singing in field on north side of Roxbury Rd. between Triadelphia Rd. & Dorsey Mills Rd. on 7/12 ORCHARD ORIOLE--one adult male and at least 6 female/immatures (including two 1st year males) at Alpha Ridge Park on 7/11 There are still plenty of singing pewees, Acadian Flycatchers, Wood Thrushes, N. Parulas, Yellow Warblers, and Common Yellowthroats around the county. The Willow Flycatchers at Centennial Park and Meadowbrook seem to have fallen silent at the end of June, and I have neither heard nor seen them this month. Also, Scarlet Tanagers seem to have fallen silent in the past week or so.
