On July 14, 2001 at Trout Run WWTP there was 1 Upland Sandpiper = remaining from the breeding birds of this summer. At Aaron Run Road 1 = Short-eared Owl was seen off and on from 8:20PM to 8:55. Several = Henslow's Sparrows could be heard singing until it was too dark to see. = The real rarity there was a Mockingbird. On July 15 at New Germany SP there was 1 male Myrtle Warbler in its = usual place near cabin 11. I have not been able to find any evidence to = confirm breeding there yet but I am sure they do. Also heard 1 = Red-breasted Nuthatch calling endlessly and at least a half dozen = Golden-crowned Kinglets were still singing. On the way home July 15 I saw 1 Least Sandpiper at the Terminus in = Cumberland and 6 species of shorebirds at Mason-Dixon Farm in Frederick = County: 6 Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 5 Spotted Sandpipers, 2 = Semipalmated Sandpipers, 11 Least Sandpipers, and 1 Short-billed = Dowitcher. Both ponds have good shorebird habitat but the upper pond = off Bullfrog Road has only a small pool of water remaining. FYI: Harney = Road is closed west of there, requiring a short detour if you are coming = from US15. Feeding on the turf farm at Taneytown, Carroll County were 4 = Killdeer and a flock of about 1,400 juvenile Starlings.
