We have seen these only at Finzel Swamp in recent years and their numbers in the state have seemed to decline. A recent newspaper article cited deer grazing on Turtlehead (the larval food plant) as one reason. We have Turtlehead in our butterfly garden but (here in suburban Maryland) don't really expect to see any Checkerspots. Also, in regard to Myrtle Warblers, two years ago we had what appeared to be a family party along Maple Glade Rd. in Swallow Falls SP. Either that or a clean-plumaged adult with two scruffy dull molting birds. I also feel they breed in western Maryland.
