Screech Owl and Horned Lark. Birds I haven't heard singing in a couple weeks were singing this week; maybe it was the rainy weather the last couple days that prompted Scarlet Tanager, Willow Flycatcher and Warbling Vireo to be heard. We're down to only five singing warbler species this week (Parula, Yellow, Common Yellowthroat, La. Waterthrush, and Kentucky), which is about par for mid-July. Other birds still heard throughout the county are E W Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Wood Thrush, and Indigo Bunting, along with several common residents. Shorebirds continue to trickle in, with Killdeer, Lesser legs, Solitary, and Least on the tally ledger. With the overall dry weather of the past couple weeks, Triadelphia Reservoir is finally down some, and there is good shorebird habitat at both Pigtail and Big Branch, with the latter actually getting some birds this week. Some details follow: KILLDEER--10 at Big Branch on 7/17; 7 there on 7/19; 4 at Md Central Farm both 7/17 and 7/19 LESSER YELLOWLEGS--3 at U Md Central Farm on both 7/17 and 7/19 SOLITARY SANDPIPER-- 1 at U Md Central Farm on 7/17 and 2 at Big Branch on 7/19 LEAST SANDPIPER--3 at U Md Central Farm on both 7/17 and 7/19 E. SCREECH OWL--heard trilling in the rain at 6:15 a.m. on 7/18 along the Patapsco River WILLOW FLYCATCHER--1 singing at Meadowbrook on 7/19 and 3 different birds singing at Centennial Park same morning, with one perched and flycatching on one of the islands YELLOW-THROATED VIREO--one each at Daniel's Rd. and Henryton Rd. on 7/18 WARBLING VIREO-- 1 singing at Alpha Ridge Park on 7/18 & 1 along Dorsey Mills Rd. on 7/17 HORNED LARK--1 adult and 3 juveniles seen at the sod farm along Jennings Chapel Rd., west of Rte 97on 7/19 CLIFF SWALLOW--still good numbers at Brighton Dam SCARLET TANAGER--one singing along Brown's Bridge Rd. on 7/17 KENTUCKY WARBLER--1 singing at Daniels Rd. on 7/18 BLUE GROSBEAK--the singing male continues conspicuously at the Rte 100/ US 29 Park & Ride (7/17 & 7/19). His favorite perch is atop the green roadsign with the little drawing of an auto and the words "Park and Ride" with arrow to the left. There was also one singing at the U Md Central Farm on 7/17.
