The down side of this is that it may well be a glimpse of the future. A hundred years from now it might be all we're left with. Well, maybe some chickens, too. Do you feel like there are no further challenges to meet, no more mountains to climb? Are you bedraggled by butterflies or dragged down by dragonflies? Well have I got a field guide for you --- Thanks to my buddy Rick Blom, I have received a copy of "A Field Guide to Cows: How to Identify and Appreciate America's 52 Breeds" by John Pukite (Penguin Books). Have you seen a Holstein in Harford, a Tarentaise in Talbot, a Kerry in Kent, a Guernsey in Garrett --- the list goes on and on. The book is actually an entertaining 142 pages. It covers such topics as: How to identify cows Clothing and equipment (binoculars, footwear, ...) Viewing tips (best times of the day, how to approach, ...) Cautions (bulls, cow pies, electric fences, ...) Cow watching etiquette (Don't moo excessively, ...) Key to the cows Breed descriptions Taxonomic chart of cows The book also deal with the dreaded hybrids. (They are as bad as gulls.) Famous cows (Do you remember Norman in "City Slickers"?) Cow superlatives At the end, the book includes a Cow Watcher's Life List as well as a cow call. And if you are MOOOved into joining, there is an organization called "Cow Observers Worldwide" (COW) based in Evans City, Pennsylvania. I heartily recommend this book to all adventurous naturalists looking for a new pasture to cross - but watch your step.
