But he teaches serious good lessons about birding in a funny way, while Joey Slinger is just completely off the wall funny. A Pete Dunne book would not be a gag gift, while the Slinger book would be nothing but a gag. A couple of years ago I was at Cape May in November, at the Hawkwatch platform. Pete showed up on a weekend, on his day off, with his Leica Televid spotting scope that he had won in the World Series of Birding. He sat there for at least 2 1/2 hours, calling out the birds at the limit of conjecture, and teaching everyone how he had figured them out. I say "at least 2 1/2 hours" because I reluctantly left at that time to drive home to NY but he was still there. What a marvelous experience that was. I feel as I imagine I would have felt if I had the same opportunity with Roger Tory Peterson. S.
