A Cooper's Hawk was a nice find, and more than two dozen Horned Larks at two different sod farms were of interest. The birds which continue to be quite vocal are pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Wood Thrush, N. Cardinal, and Indigo Bunting. Only five species of warbler were heard this week, with Yellows and Common Yellowthroats widespread, but only partial or brief utterances from La. Waterthrush, N. Parula, and Black-and-white Warbler. Yellow-throated Vireos are getting quiet, too, and Scarlet Tanagers are only occasionally heard. The rundown: GREEN HERON-- there were 9 at the U Md Central Farm on 7/24 COOPER'S HAWK -- one over landfill, viewed from Alpha Ridge Park on 7/26 AM. KESTREL -- one at Daisy Rd. sod farm on 7/26 and 7/27; one at Alpha Ridge Park on 7/27 KILLDEER-- good numbers at all the sod farms, and at the U Md Central Farm LESSER YELLOWLEGS -- one at U Md Central Farm on 7/24; not seen yesterday or today SOLITARY SANDPIPER -- one at U Md Central Farm on 7/26 LEAST SANDPIPER -- 2 at Big Branch on 7/24; 4 at U Md Central Farm same day, but only 3 there on 7/26 and only one there today (7/27) PECTORAL SANDPIPER -- 3 at U Md Central Farm on 7/24, but not seen yesterday or today RING-BILLED GULL -- one at Lake Kittamaqundi on 7/24 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO -- two different birds vocalizing at Daniels on 7/27 RUBY-THROATED HUMMER -- one at Daniels on 7/27 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO -- just half of a song ("3A") at Henryton on 7/27 HORNED LARK -- 12 at the Daisy Rd. sod farm on 7/27, and another 15 at the Jennings Chapel Rd. sod farm the same morning BG GNATCATCHER -- still a few vocalizing at Daniels and Henryton on 7/27 GRASSHOPPER SPARROW -- still a few vocalizing along Triadelphia Mill Rd. and at the U Md Central Farm BLUE GROSBEAK -- the songster at Meadowbrook (Park & Ride) was being very vo cal on 7/24, but was not seen or heard on 7/27; another was seen on a tel. wire along Old Frederick Rd., about three miles east of Rte 94 on 7/27.
