From: Michael Bowen Subject: DC sightings Comments: To: Voice of the Naturalist Comments: cc: Mary Paul Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Some nice shorebirds, 8 species in all, were seen late this morning, at dead low tide, in Kingman Lake, upstream of the Benning Rd. bridge in NE DC: 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER 6 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER 10 LEAST SANDPIPER 16 PECTORAL SANDPIPER (new species for me in DC) 20+ KILLDEER It was great to watch the Least and the Pectorals feeding together and to note size and plumage differences. Most birds were juveniles, judging from the spangled back plumage. Also around were several GREAT BLUE HERON, 10 GREAT EGRETS and a BELTED KINGFISHER. A juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was in the reeds in the larger of the two new shallow ponds along the golf course just east of Kingman lake, north of the driving range. Whereas Black-crowns are common along the Potomac, especially near Fletcher's Boathouse and Chain Bridge (and of course at the zoo), I don't remember seeing them in this part of town before. At Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, there were 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS 10 KILLDEER 1 GREEN HERON a singing MARSH WREN near the end of the boardwalk several INDIGO BUNTINGS a WHITE-EYED VIREO and an enormous number of STARLINGS eating fruit in some of the cherry trees At River Terrace Park, just downstream from the construction work by the Benning Rd. bridge there were 20+ RING-BILLED GULL. One bird was a juvenile, freshly arrived from the breeding grounds, wherever they are (not in Maryland, for sure). Any MDOpreyers know where the closest Ring-bill nesting areas are?
