I have heard up to four calling at different positions at the same time, and see pairs of them often. Some of them on occasion choose to make my driveway their strolling spot, and will even run ahead of the car without flying as I approach. (I would admit to driving pretty slowly when I see them.) Back in early January, a covey of them had been around, and they continue to survive. I have not seen any young, but there is plenty of suitable habitat here, so some should have nesting success. Other birds - About two weeks ago, Orchard Orioles successfully fledged at least one little chick from their nest in a Walnut Tree about 15 feet above the ground, and hanging over part of one of our flower gardens. A second brood of Bluebirds exited the favored house behind part of my garden today. At least three little ones this time. The earlier brood had four. A new yard bird came here yesterday - a Bank Swallow - to rest on a line I have strung on my pier - beside about 12 Barn Swallows making use of the same line. That is yard bird #161. (Norm - have you been having success in adding species? for I note that my #161 is getting up into your range.) A new bird for me at the Pickering Creek Sanctuary this week also - on Friday there was one Cliff Swallow on their lines, along with my count of 98 Bank Swallows over there. That was #136 for my species count at that site. A family of Green-backed Herons (two adults, one young) has been hanging around Leeds Creek each morning for the past several days. Hummingbirds (also two adults and one young) are regular visitors at my two feeders. Purple Martins are flying around over the Creek each morning, but to date seem to be ignoring the roosting site they used in my trees a couple of years ago. The martin house I put up last year remains unoccupied. But just outside of Easton, I now have noticed three homes where martins are present.
