They are one of the most striking moths I have ever seen. Some of the websites may refer to the USGS information regarding status of some of these insect in various counties. That information is unreliable, as the only way to get the status of a bug updated is either to send a specimen or photograph to an entomologist or some other expert to have it identified. Unlike birds, they will not accept descriptions from amateur enthusiasts to document presence in a county. I have identified to species about one-hundred and fifty moth species in my yard, however only one moth is listed for Culpeper County. Cheers...
