LA waterthrush Rock Creek Golf Course was quite birdy this morning (8/2) between 6-8am. There were many kingbirds, flickers, and purple martins (my first in DC -- a well-populated martin house stands near the clubhouse). Other birds included eastern phoebe, eastern wood pewee, great crested flycatcher, and chipping sparrow. By contrast, two mornings ago (7/31), the Chain Bridge/Fletcher's Boathouse area seemed to have fewer (or quieter) birds than usual. I did see 3 prothonotary warblers and a yellow warbler at Fletcher's, but only 3 black-crowned night-herons (1 at Fletcher's, 2 at Chain Bridge), few great blue herons, and no common yellowthroats. There were 20+ wood ducks in the Chain Bridge ponds. Finally, a nice surprise yesterday (8/1) during a lunch-time walk through a neighborhood park at the corner of River Rd and Willard Ave in Chevy Chase, MD -- a Louisiana waterthrush bobbing on the banks of the stream that runs through the park.
