I checked the flats at the mouth of Oxen Run almost daily this week and tied my all time low of 0 shorebirds -- not even a Killdeer -- on Thursday. Nevertheless, persistence pays off with a Western Sandpiper on Tuesday (7/31) and a Sanderling today (8/3). The mudflats are all in PG county MD, but when the last mud disappeared under the rising tide (6:15PM), the Sanderling flew west over the DC portion of the cove, then northwest toward the open Potomac.
