When I picked up my bins for a closer look, it turned out to be an immature (not a juvenile; an older immature as in Kaufmanns field guide) BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, # 166 for my "yard". New yard birds are becoming fewer and farther between, so something like this was very exciting! It flew into the trees as I approached with the dog to our "usual" stopping spot by a bench, and didn't return. I will look for it again this evening, after work.
