They also found a dead adult royal there that had been banded as a chick on Metomkin Island, VA, in 1984. Metomkin is sometimes spelled Metompkin. I do not know which is really correct. I should mention the names of our banding party to the Smith Island, MD, area (VA portion) of the same day as described in my previous posting: banders John Weske and Dave Brinker with Ruth Boettcher, Carol Erwin, Bob Ake, Cheyenne Johnson, and myself serving as bird catchers. Loads of toads. Last weekend there were lots of Fowler's Toads at Rigby in Talbot Co., MD, especially small ones, as has been the case most of the summer. The several periods of heavy rains, most recently on Sunday, July 29 (as well as the previous week) no doubt have been helpful for them as well as for leopard frogs. Showing my age. In my previous posting I used the old name, Yellow-billed Tropicbird. Apparently people who know what they are talking about today say White-tailed Tropicbird. Ludlow Griscom used to say: "I make mistakes but I am the first one to notice them." Fortunately I was the first to notice this one. Also, far from their being moderate numbers of Cory's Shearwaters off Hatteras last weekend, George says 1,874 were estimated last Saturday. Best to all.-Harry Armistead, 523 E.
