Opportunity Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract is draining its largest lake, Lake Allen. The plug was pulled 2-3 weeks back, and I'm told the water level has finally fallen substantially. When they last drained Lake Allen 2 or 3 summers ago, the resulting mud drew quite a few herons (mostly Great Egret, a few Little Blue Herons) and shorebirds (Pectoral and Least are all I can recall). Lake Allen is USUALLY closed, especially on weekdays, but OFTEN opens up in the afternoon after 3 pm. However, the Lake WILL be open all day this Saturday (11 Aug) and Sunday (12 Aug). Alas, many MOS-ers will be otherwise occupied! If you plan on going any other day, call first, ask re the status of Lake Allen: 410-674-3304. ALL visitors MUST check at the Visitor Contact Station. Access is on rt. 198 east of Laurel, just west of the rt. 32 junction. Turn at the ball fields. -Kurt Schwarz Howard County Patux.
