Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 19:45:12 -0400 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Michael Bowen Subject: DC sightings 8/13 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Here are some sightings made in the District of Columbia on Monday, August 13, 2001: At River Terrace Park, NE DC there were: 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS 2 FORSTER'S TERN At Kingman Lake, upstream of the Benning Rd. bridge: 2 GREAT EGRET 20+ KILLDEER 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER 8 SPOTTED SANDPIPER 10 LEAST SANDPIPER 16 PECTORAL SANDPIPER 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER In Anacostia Park and in the adjacent wetlands there were: 6 D-C CORMORANT 1 imm. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON 1 GREEN HERON 2 GREAT EGRET 300+ LAUGHING GULL, about 1/3 being juvenile birds 20+ RING-BILLED GULL 30-40 FORSTER'S TERN fishing in the Anacostia 2 EASTERN KINGBIRD At Hains Point there were: 4 ROYAL TERN 1 CASPIAN TERN At the old marina at the end of Gibbons St. in Alexandria, VA (in DC waters!) were: 100+ FORSTER'S TERN In the Potomac just south of Reagan National Airport was a diving duck, actively diving, which I could see just well enough to call 1 SCAUP (SP.?) In the same vicinity were 2 OSPREY, which probably nested nearby. Nowhere, alas, did I see a WILLET, as reported by Paul Pisano and Rob Hilton last Saturday. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD D.H.
