I just finished talking with Greg Kearns of Patuxent River Park. He saw the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck on Tuesday, August 14, on the Anne Arundel side of the Patuxent River just north of the old railroad crossing. He was in a boat and setting up traps for Sora banding. It flushed with a group of about 50 mallards. This area can be seen from land at the Jug Bay Sanctuary. Later that day he talked with a group who had been canoeing. They saw the bird on the Anne Arundel side of the river north of the mouth of Mattaponi Creek. This is approximately the same area where Danny Bystrak saw the bird. This area can bee viewed from Selby's Landing. There are several possible vantage points from land [DeLorme 38, A-1] On the Prince George's County side: Drive east from Rt. 382 [Croom Road] on Croom Airport Road. After several miles, turn left into the park and continue to (1) Jackson Landing at Patuxent River Park[note the boat-landing symbol]. This is the Patuxent River Park headquarters. Phone # 301-647-6074 for more information. [the park road is not shown on the DeLorme map]. Take Croom Airport Rd. all the way to the end to (2) Selby's Landing [note boat-landing symbol]. On Saturday, you may have to walk the last half-mile or so to the landing. On Sunday the gate sould be open as part of the Chesapeake Wildlife Driving Tour, a one-way drive that ends at Merkle WMA. On the Anne Arundel side: (3) Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. http://www.crosswinds.net/~jugbay/jugbay.html Check with the Patuxent River Park to ask about launching regulations, fees, and possible boat tours from Jackson Landing.
