Brian Patteson and FONT are two companies which provides trips. They have web sites. Also, you should try to get your hands on John Fussell's "A Birders Guide to Coastal North Carolina". It has a wealth of information in it. The PINWR Visitor Center have a checklist (you may have to ask at the desk for it). I would definitely include a visit to the Bode Island lighthouse area, particularly in the afternoon when the light is behind you looking at the pond. There is a bird sightings clipboard at Pea Island visitor center and another at the old Coast Guard center at Cape Hatteras point (right side just before you reach the Cape Hatteras Point camp ground while heading south. I have found the Buxton Woods area at Cape Hatteras generally are not that productive, except during migration. Good luck.
